Traveling became a bitter event over the sun-cracked ground of Sulter Slay. Dyphestive was tied to a basilisk, and so was Grey Cloak. In a cruel twist, Grey Cloak was towed behind the lizard like a log.

Dyphestive pleaded with the Scavengers to let him carry his friend. The coldhearted Scavengers cut off his requests by whacking him all over with clubs. He clammed up after the third time, instead opting to play along while casually looking skyward for Streak. The little dragon might be the only hope they had.

Koll took a moment to fall back from the pack and join him. The dwarf didn’t seem chipper like he had been before. Instead, he seemed cold and calculating. “Don’t feel bad, young man. Men and women more seasoned than you have fallen prey to our traps. I’ve been doing this a long time. I’m very good at it. Huh.”

Dyphestive clenched his jaw. If he ever got his hands on the dwarf, he would break his neck.

“You may speak.” He tapped his staff twice on the ground. “The Scavengers won’t throttle you as long as you’re spoken to first.”

Hearing the dwarf’s confident tone, Dyphestive decided to play the role of the fearful and downtrodden. Let them think I’m young and stupid. Get the dwarf talking. “Are you really going to eat us?”

“Perhaps,” Koll said. “We can find many uses for men like you.”

Dyphestive purposefully stumbled on a stone and fell to his knees.

The Scavengers stopped and turned.

He scrambled up, and with a worried look, he said, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” He huffed for breath. “What else would you do with us?”

“That will be decided later.”

Dyphestive looked back at Grey Cloak. “Is he going to die from the tick bite?”

“He will if we don’t take it off, but for now, it’s a foolproof way to keep him incapacitated.” Koll fingered his beard shaped like a bun. “We are fortunate that he fell upon it. You might have been more formidable otherwise.”

Keep him talking, Dyphestive thought. Koll had given him a hint that the tick might not be as fatal as it seemed, and they were concerned about numbers. It seemed that the Scavengers wouldn’t take on a strong group, at least not without numbers. At the present, there were only twelve Scavengers plus Koll. Three of them rode giant lizards.

If I had a suit of armor, I think I could take them. The problem was he didn’t have a suit of armor, and he couldn’t put Grey Cloak in danger. If he tried anything, they could kill Grey Cloak.

Dyphestive subtly strained against his bonds. His wrists were wrapped so tightly that he couldn’t feel his fingers. He imagined them being bloodred. Without any sort of leverage, he had little hope of breaking them.

“Do we have far?” he asked.

“Why, are you in a hurry to die?” Koll replied.

“No.”
